RCH Attempts a 3D Tutorial [Episode 2: Security Orb] (2024)

Well, this might just be the worst tutorial I've ever made. I'm archiving it, due to being part of the set. I've edited out a lot of filler, but even without the copius tangents, it is very unreliable as a learning source (unless, you can somehow work with it, and your own skills to make the model work. Not recommended for beginners). I cut out the ending, because it came with a smaller, separe tutorial on something else, which will make up part 3 of this series. I wouldn't recommend learning much from this...except what not to do, which, believe it or not, is a fantastic way to learn. It's how I learnt to write.

If I made this tutorial now, I'd play to my strengths more. I've said all I need to in the desc, regarding my disappointments. So, I'll just mention what I was trying to do. The Security Orb from Oddworld has facinated me since childhood, mainly due to its design inconsistencies, non-existent death animations, and non-existent death in the third game. When I was gearing up for VFX edits in 2022, I decided to recreate it how I would have done it, and finally put my childhood quandries to rest. This line of thinking got me to design an 8-light version in 2023, which you'll have seen in episode 1 of this series. Guys, I don't remember how I achieved the grooves in the original model. I think, if I were to do this now, I'd try and really remember the techniques before going on mic for it. I was mentally unwell at the time, and had no patience. Maybe if I retooled the design for a fanfic or something, I could try to redo this. Guess we'll see. I have a few thoughts floating about in my head...
